Check this thing out! Is that a lap steel? A Diddley Bow? A dulcimer? A drone instrument? A laptop washtub bass? A bedpan?

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and yes.

I wish I knew more about the origins of this thing, because it sure is interesting. I have found a few different ways to play it. You can use a slide either on top of the string on below it to change the pitch, you can tune it to a certain note and use it as a drone, or you can tune and de-tune it as you pluck it to create a washtub bass like effect.

Check out the YouTube video below to get a good idea of what I mean. (I didn’t have a slide on hand, so I used a lighter. It sounds better with a glass slide.)

I made a few improvements, it originally had a strat style pickup, but I changed it to a flat mount goldfoil so that the string would clear the pup a little better. When I got it, it had a length of picture hanging wire as the string, so I replaced it with a bass A string.

This thing is a lot of fun, and it would be great for any folk or Appalachia music, of course, but I also think it has untapped potential as a drone or noisemaker for a noise/experimental project. If you ran this thing through a pedalboard, I bet you could get a lot of cool tones and effects out of it.

You won’t find anything else like it, and hey, if this COVID-19 thing gets any worse, you can always use it as a bedpan! 😀 😀 😀
