For sale here is a lovely vintage Kingston / Teisco / Heit Deluxe / Norma / Whatever offset guitar with an added humbucker. It was made by Matsumoku in Japan in the late 60s. I suspect this was made with the headstock name was Kingston, as I have had one just like this in the past with the plate still on it.
The original bridge pickup was DOA, and I realized the rout would accommodate a humbucker….so here we are. The humbucker was one I pulled from a 1970s lawsuit era LP. Sounds GREAT, really fat and crunchy. Makes this guitar one mean little pup!
I have been calling this guitar “Fido” due top the fact that the headstock has obviously been chewed on by a previous owner’s dog. There are also a few marks in the finish, a stripe on the back and a chunk in the side. BUT, all of the damage is cosmetic (and kinda fun) — structurally, this thing is awesome. No issues at all. (See pics for full details)
Fido plays great. Super low action. The bridge and truss are fully adjustable and still have play. The neck pickup sounds amazing, as well. Crisp and shimmery when clean, fat and full when distorted or fuzzed up. The single sounds more like a P-90 than straight singles, somewhere in between.
The mahogany/rosewood neck is beautiful and feels great in your hands. The neck is FAT. A “baseball bat” or “U” sort of shape. I love it, but I know fatter profile shapes are very polarizing. The body is Mahogany as well, and has a wonderful darker tonal profile.
Can’t beat this for a vintage sound and look at the price! As always, I cleaned it up, polished the finish, oiled the board, flushed the electronics, changed the strings and set the action as low as I could. This guitar comes with no case or gig bag, but I pack my guitars tight and ship with full insurance.
Perfect for all your surf, garage, punk, indie or general rock n roll needs!
